Dr. Mohd Hilmi Ramli is the current Director of Raja Zarith Sofiah Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science & Civilisation, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (RZS-CASIS UTM). He obtained his Ph.D at the Centre in January 2020 with a thesis entitled "An Analysis of Legal Person Using Taklīf and Shakhṣ al-I‘tibārī in Islām". While pursuing his Ph.D, he was awarded the Zamalah Ph.D Scholarship in UTM that allowed him to actively involved in the Centre's academic and intellectual development programs, such as: tutoring, editing and proofreading several publications, organizing events and assisting research projects.

 

He first obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Islamic Revealed Knowledge (Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh) from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2005. In 2006 he pursued a Post Graduate Diploma in Islamic Banking and Finance from Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IiBF), IIUM. He worked as a Manager in the Islamic banking and finance industry for several years before joining academia.

 

During his studies at RZS-CASIS, he has held several positions such as Research Assistant and Tutor at the RZS-CASIS from 2016-2019. In 2015, he obtained from the Centre his Masters of Philosophy in Islamic Thought and Civilization with a focus on the concept of muḍārabah based on al-Sarakhsī's al-Mabsūṭ. He is also a member of the Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS) since 2015.

 

He has produced several academic works, among them: “Al-Taftāzānī’s Sources of Knowledge in Sharḥ al-Talwīḥ ‘alā al-Tawḍīḥ li Matn al-Tanqīḥ fī Uṣūl al-Fiqh” (Vol. 22 No. 2 (2020): Afkar: Jurnal Akidah & Pemikiran Islam); “The Origin and Purpose of Dhimmah According to the Early Uṣūliyyūn” (Jurnal Kemanusiaan, UTM, 2019); “Commercial Partnership in Islam: A Brief Survey of Kitāb al-Muḍārabah of al-Mabsūt by al-Sarakhsī” (d. 483/1090) (TAFHIM, IKIM, 2018); “Faham dan Pengamalan Dasar Kebudayaan Kebangsaan: Satu Pembudayaan Konsep ‘Adil” in Bunga Rampai Bangsa, Kebangsaan dan Patriotisme (CASIS & Akademi Kenegaraan, 2015).
